How to Say NO!
Kelly’s Communication E -tip #5

The Situation

You really need to say ‘No’ to some business and personal requests and invitations. However, you’re concerned that you may never work again or even worse – not get another invitation!

Communication Action Tip

Tip One:                Avoid In-direct No’s.

In-direct No’s are really ‘maybe’s’ in disguise.

Popular in-direct No’s:

“I’ll get back to you.”  “I’ll think about it.”  “Let me check my day timer.”

“I have to talk to my associate, husband, wife, dog, cat, psychic...”

Tip Two:                In your personal life be direct.

“Thanks for thinking of me.  However bungee jumping isn’t my thing.”  Or

“Thanks for the invitation.  However I’m taking it easy this weekend.”

Tip Three:             In business become a resource.

Avoid saying, “No I can’t”, “I don’t know how”, or “We don’t do...”

Instead say, “Let me refer you to...”

Final Thoughts

Keep negative communication positive.
As an alternative to turning people down, thank them instead.  Replace ‘but’ with ‘however’ as it’s easier to hear.  Recognize that when you refer others you are focusing on what you will do, not on what you can’t, or won’t do.
